Kong(struction), 2026

During a workshop on photography and AI led by French artist Gwenola Wagon, Jiaqi combined his ongoing research on civic trompe-l’oeil with an archive of scanned Hong Kong postcards to produce a series of 12 new postcards using generative AI. By making slight changes to the original scans, he reimagined landmark buildings in Hong Kong, mainly around Victoria Harbour, as undergoing maintenance. These buildings are wrapped in life-size printed images of their own façades, using a method commonly seen in contemporary building maintenance. Applied to archival images from a time when large-scale digital printing was still developing, this method creates a contradiction between time and technology, questioning the authenticity of the archive. At the same time, reflecting his interest in contemporary trompe-l’oeil, these postcards play with the idea that trompe-l’oeil has expanded beyond a genre of painting to involve power relations between art and civic life.
